The doctor joked about it at first, “Two for the price of one.” He said.
Their mother was okay with the jokes, and loved her conjoined twins more than anything in the whole wide world.
Her twins were connected by the hip.
She had a son on the right side and a daughter on the left, she named them Milo and Millie.
Their uncle always wanted to know more about them and how being Siamese twins was like.
He couldn’t ask them because they were just babies so he asked their mother how things were.
She told him she loves feeding them apple sauce or some other mashed up goo.
Because if the aeroplane failed to land in one mouth it could just try landing in the mouth next to it.
The only problem she could see was if Milo was left handed and Millie right handed.
On birthdays their uncle would always question them on the subject.
He found out when they went swimming one of them could just stay above water and do the breathing while the other swam underwater.
And one Halloween they went together as a Japanese sumo wrestler.
They were always positive about being conjoined brother and sister.
When he asked them to name something bad they could never come up with anything.
Even in their teens they stayed positive.
They told their uncle in secrecy that at school they would cheat on tests.
One of them would learn other stuff than the other.
And they would combine their two brains so they would know all the answers.
He took the secret to his grave, they also told him that they always had someone to sit next to on the train.
On their 21st birthday their uncle asked them if they were getting tired of being stuck together yet.
After thinking about it for a while they told him if one of them fell asleep at the wheel the other one could continue driving.
They liked weekend movie marathon because they took shifts watching.
One of them would watch movies while the other was asleep, and after a couple of hours they would switched.
Their uncle expected that as adults they would run into a lot of problems.
So he visited their apartment in town and while they drank some herbal tea he asked them again.
Milo told him he liked that they got paid double for their job.
Millie was thinking about it for a while and changed the subject by asking him if he wanted some more tea.
Years later they found out that their uncle that they had not seen or heard from in years, died of starvation on a deserted island.
He did manage to finish a book about Siamese twins that he dedicated to them.
But there were always other people that asked them what it was like to be joined together by the hip.
Nowadays it was mostly the other elderly people in the retirement home, or nurses asking them what it was like.
They used an old saying to sum it up, “Two heads are better than one.” they said.
Their memory stayed sharp even at their old age, they were still solving puzzles and telling people the stories that make up their lives.
And after a long life together they were happy that they weren’t attached by their backs.
