“I have to hang up now, I’m going into the tunnel and I am going to lose connection.” She spoke into her mobile phone at a rapid pace.
The young boy and girl were sitting on the backseat stared at each other, and as soon as the car went into the tunnel, they began holding their breaths to see who could hold it the longest.
“I don’t want to babysit these damn kids!” She yelled into the phone.
They were pinching each others nose shut, so they both couldn’t cheat.
“No. I don’t care what Robin said. I have to hang up now, ha-n—g u pnow.” She said to the obstinate person on the other end of the line.
Halfway through the tunnel they looked like two dueling blowfish, with their eyes about to pop out.
“Mom. Mom?” She asked before she hung up the phone.
She calmed down and adjusted her seat, turned on the radio to her favorite station and relaxed a bit.
The car was moving into the light at the end of the tunnel, and they were still in their little competition of who could hold their breath the longest.
The phone rang again, she picked it up and the screen read ‘Mom’, she threw it onto the floor.
The check-engine light had been blinking ever since she drove to their school to pick them up, and she had been completely ignoring it ever since.
Her car sputtered, the engine turned off and the car started to slow down. The car came to a stop just before the edge of the tunnel, her kids in the backseat looked at each other in fear.
They both wanted to win so badly they just wouldn’t give up, and like two flies trapped behind a store window in full summer sun, they fell down onto the floor of the car.
