  • Magic Rocks, Dude (200th story)

    December 5, 2009 — With 1,703 words — Read — Share
Small rocks were scattered across the living room floor and some were lost on the kitchen floor.
Mendy was sitting on the small carpet in the center of the room with a bunch of rocks on her lap and was wearing the yellow rubber gloves she got from the cupboard below the sink.
Her mother just stepped into the living room carrying some shopping bags, “Mendy why are all these rocks lying on the floor?” she asked.
    “Their magical.”, Mendy replied.
“Magical? Like how?”, her mother asked.
“That one gives you the power to lift anything! And if you touch that one you become a cat and Bilbo will chase you around the room. And the one shaped like a ear is for hearing better.”, Mendy explained while pointing at it with her index finger that held a plastic ring she got after begging for one for over a half hour, at the Happy Crabby the sea fast food paradise for kids.
Her mother hated a mess and her hand automatically went for one of the rocks, from the rock’s point of view it was like a spider jumping on top of him.
“No!”, Mendy yelled when her mother was about to pick it up.
She got startled, “What, did the dog pee on this too?”
“Bad dog Bilbo!” She yelled and Bilbo looked back at her, his eyes looked innocent as always.
“No, thats a dizzy rock, if you touch it you’ll feel dizzy like you just did a hundred spins on dad’s desk chair!”
She went back to the kitchen that was connected to the living room, to unpack some of the groceries.
Mendy continued to examine her rocks by sniffing, nearly holding it against her eye and sometimes a little flick with her tongue to taste it.
Her mother was transporting a bottle of milk from the counter to the refrigerator when she looked into the room and saw the dog was about to pee against the fish tank, she forgot to hold onto the bottle of milk and it fell to the ground, shattering at her feet, lucky for her she was wearing sturdy slippers that were now wet from the milk.
The milk seeped in and her socks got wet too she kicked the pieces of glass into one pile and stepped into the living room.
She yelled at the dog to stop but it did not listen, she ran across the room which scared him and he didn’t spill a drop near the fish tank.
“Bad dog!” She yelled at Bilbo again, who was now hiding in his basket.
She took off her slippers followed by her socks.
Her toes started wiggling because they were so happy that they finally smelled some fresh air.
Mendy was still inspecting her rocks, her eyes followed the bare feet of her mother walking back to the kitchen.
Her eyes and mouth opened wide but not a word could get out when she saw her mother stepping onto a rock that was lying on the floor.
“Ah, stupid rocks!” She yelled as she kicks it across the room, in her misfortune it ended up at a small pile of rocks that all looked identical.
The phone rang and her mother picked it up, it was her dad on the other end, Mendy walked over to the pile of identical rocks and tried to figure out which one her mom stepped on.
“No I can’t do that, I have to much to do here. I still have to unpack the groceries, watch Mendy and your damn dog, and I have to prepare dinner.”, She told dad.
“It’s okay sweetheart, see you soon. Love you.”, She said into the telephone.
“That was daddy, he will be home in time for dinner.”, She told Mendy.
Even though her dad was not home very often they got along great, he would have appreciated the rocks right away, unlike her mom.
Mendy ran to the kitchen when she figured out which rock her mother stepped on, her mother’s wet feet had left a print on the rock.
“Mom, mom!” she yelled while she tugged her mother’s shirt.
Her mother quickly looking down from above, “Not now Mendy, I have to much to do.”, She said.
Mendy went back into the living room when she out of nowhere heard someone hiccup.
It was her mother, who immediately started to poor a glass of water for herself.
But after a couple of glasses of water and some failed attempts to hold her breath the hiccups continued.
Mendy stared at her mother this whole time, and they looked at each other, her mother looked upset.
“Mom, you stepped on a rock. The hiccup rock.”, Mendy explained.
“There’s no such thing, this will be over soon.”, Her mother said who continued unpacking her groceries.
Mendy continued to look into the kitchen while her mother was having a heavy attack of the hiccups.
Her mother’s hiccups got worse and she was sitting on the cough and slowly freaking out, after failing to dial the number of her doctor she tried to talk to Mendy.
    “Fi—ne, H I bel—ieve y—you.”, She said in a way.
“We have to find the remedy stone!” Mendy said in a loud voice because she felt excited by the possibility of adventure.
    “Wh—ere!” Her mother yelped.
Mendy collected all the rocks on the floor and laid them out on the coffee table.
She looked at them and appeared to be in deep thought while her mother was constantly making the sound of hiccups.
“I think this one might help, this is the only one here that might.”, Mendy explained as she held the rock in front of her mother’s lap.
    “O—0—kay.”, She said.
    She touched the rock.
    She licked the rock.
    She sniffed the rock.
    But nothing happened.
“Me—ndy!” her mother yelled out of fear of a future filled with hiccups.
Mendy ran into the hallway and quickly ran back with two pair of shoes.
“We can go to the forest where I collected them, near the cave, and see if we can find one that cures your hiccups.”, Mendy said while she tied her shoelaces.
    “O—0—-kay.”, Her mother said.
Mendy helped her mother put on her shoes and coat, and they went outside, and stepped into the forest connected to their backyard.
After walking for about twenty minutes they reached the cave, it looked just like a ordinary cave with lots of small rocks lying in front of it.
“The hiccup one was kinda blue, so the cure should be too.”, Mendy said.
They searched in front of the cave and found all kind of rocks in all kind of colors.
“Th—is wa—s —a b—ad id—idea.”, Her mother said as she turned around to walk back to the house.
She heard mendy’s shoes stepping on the small rocks, the sound was going away from her, and she turned around and saw Mendy running into the dark cave, “Men—dy!” She yelled.
Her mother wanted to chase after her but she had a hiccup attack that was even worse than the ones from before that made her entire body cramp up with each hiccup.
Mendy was instantly surrounded by darkness and was lost before she could even blink an eye.
She just continued walking forward until she saw light at the end of the cave, she carefully walked towards it.
Her shoes kept slipping as she was walking on a floor of the small rocks, she was amazed at how many there were when she got close enough to the light, the light was coming from another entrance, she looked towards it from a distance, and in the middle of the sunlight she saw a bright blue rock, she ran towards it and picked it up.
And as she got up she saw what was in front of her.
It was a bright yellow and making a roaring sound, and it reeked of rotten food.
“What are you doing here little girl? How did you get here?” A man asked.
She looked around and saw two man wearing safety helmet staring at her.
“My mom has the hiccups and I needed a rock that could cure her.”, Mendy explained.
“Listen little girl, we don’t care this is a chemical waste plant, a very dangerous place, Earl here will bring you back to the other side of the cave.”, The man explained.
Earl walked up to her and picked a big flash light from his belt, and smiled at her, his teeth looked strange to her.
He led her back to the other side of the cave and went back when he saw her mother was waiting for her.
She was clearly upset, “Mendy! Where were you?” She yelled while she ran towards Mendy.
Mendy ran towards her mother and hugged her tightly with the rock in her left hand.
When her mother let go she handed her the rock and she took it.
“What a pretty rock.”, Her mother said.
“It’s the rock with the cure. See! Your hiccups are gone!” Mendy yelled with joy.
Her mother was surprised and had her hand on her chest and was breathing in the fresh forest air.
“Good.”, She simple said, and the walked back home.
When they arrived back home, Mendy’s father was home too, they stepped into the living room.
Her father was on the floor near the fish tank with a bucket of water and a piece of cloth.
    “Bilbo!” Her mother yelled.
“Hey Pollywog!” he yelled from across the room, mendy ran to her father and hugged him, he held the cloth drenched with dog pee as far away from their hug he could.
At dinner Mendy told her father what a day she had, and about the rocks of course.
“And them mom stepped onto the hiccup rock and she couldn’t stop her hiccups. So we went back to the cave to find a rock that could cure hiccups.”, she explained.
“Wow, amazing, so I take it you found one?” He said.
Mendy swallowed her mouthful of food and continued, “Yes, I that bright blue.” She said while pointing at the rock she placed on the coffee table.”
“Quite the explorer, Pollywog the explorer.”, Her father said.
“And then I gave mom the rock and her hiccups were gone!” Mendy said with a big smile across her face.
Her mother stopped her fork when it was about to get to her mouth, “That’s crazy. The rock that I touched, smelled and licked didn’t do anything now did it?” She said.
And then she got up and jumped on the table and then into the living room where she jumped around like a frog yelling, “Mendy!”
