  • Luring Strangers With Candy

    January 22, 2010 — With 807 words & Read — Labelled as: Story
Most people will say summer is the best time of year, but not for Javier, spring was his thing, is what he always told people.
On a beautiful day in may Javier was walking in the park in the same route he always took until the construction of a shopping mall blocked his way, so he took a detour which meant he had to walk pass the playground.
His dog had trouble doing his business so he had been in the park for hours already, the dog insisted on smelling every little spot and sitting and squatting in every possible way to see if it would get his business running.
They walked by the playground, it was filled with kids who were spending their afternoon playing outside.
“You like what your seeing mister? Are you?!” The little boy swinging on the swing set yelled.
Javier looked around to see if the boy was really addressing him or if he meant to say that to someone else.
A chubby kid took a dive from the slide and got stuck mid way, “You like kids with a bit of meat on their bones? Well?” He squealed.
Javier wasn’t sure what was going on, but was starting to understand how it would feel to be molested by words, he kept on walking and tried to avoid eye contact.
“You want to do nasty things to me? Do you!?” A little girl shouted while climbing from one end to the other on the monkey bars.
The tall and thin boy that got stuck in the jungle gym didn’t say anything, but did snap a photo of Javier using his mobile phone.
Javier was bewildered and couldn’t help but to stare at the boy building a sand castle in the sandbox, he waited for him to talk.
The boy cleaned his mouth and face first using his sleeve, free from sand he yelled, “You want to show me the sandbox you got in your basement? Because it has the best sand imported from Arabia, perfect for castles? Do you?”
Javier quickly dashes away, and tried to get pass the playground as fast as he could but his dog was taking his time.
The twin girls on the seesaw yelled in unison, “Are we the threesome you’ve been dreaming off? Are we?”
He couldn’t take it any more, and started to run pass the playground as fast as he could, dragging his dog along.
When he was almost in the clear he noticed a trail of smarties on the ground and without thinking he tied his dog to a tree and began picking them up and putting them in his pockets.
He followed the trail of candy, until the edge of a dense wall of bushes and trees, he knew he shouldn’t be following the trail inside but he really liked smarties.
So he started to crawl through all the vegetation which seemed to be endless until he finally crawled his way out and was surrounded by darkness.
With a handful of smarties he took another step forward into the darkness, that one step was one too many and he slipped into a hole.
He seemed to be fine and stood up but couldn’t reach the ledge, but then bright lights went on and he was blinded for a brief moment.
    “Javier Fraley?” A voice asked.
He looked up and saw a man with a camera crew behind him staring down into the pit, Javier nodded with a scared look on his face.
“You just got Pwned!” The man yelled down into the pit.
Javier wasn’t sure what to say or do and before he could make a decision he got hit in the face by a rope ladder.
He climbed out of the pit, dusted himself off, picked up the smarties at his feet and cleaned them before he placed them into his mouth.
To him it was like comfort food, at that very moment the only thing that could calm him down a bit.
He could now see who the man was, a thirty something jock that was still stuck in his time spend in high school.
“Dude, this was all just hoax and you literally fell for it. We know your not a pervert.”, The jock said and laughed all the way back to the playground.
“And these aren’t real kids, their actors!” The jock laughed.
Then the kids started to deform and like a snake they lost their costumes and they got up and were twice their previous size and they all started laughing at him.
For another couple of minutes the camera recorded Javier helplessly confused face then the crew and actors left, leaving behind Javier and a playground full of empty children skins.
Javier twitched every quarter of a second or so while rocking back and forth holding onto one of the skins.
Birds were chirping, the sun was shining, trees and flowers were blooming.
And his dog finally found the right pose to take a shit.
