  • Love Has It’s Toll

    September 7, 2009 — With 723 words & Read — Labelled as: Story
A straight line of toll booths cuts the highway in two.
From a distance the reflections coming from the windows blinds the people driving towards them.
In the 4Th booth from the left or the 6Th booth from the right depending on from where you start to count is her booth.
Her work is simple and only involves accepting money and letting people go through a gate that goes up with the press of a button.
More than a plain “Hello” and “Thank you” when she returns change was the only social contact she got in a work day.
For some time now there has been one car that keeps going to her booth instead of all the other ones.
It became the best part of her day when the man of her dreams passed by.
The simple touch in their exchange of his money and a receipt gave her a great feeling that lasted through out most of the day.
But sometimes the thought of ever having more than that made her depressed.
She didn’t know what to say more than her standard Hello, and because she only had a very short time to do anything but give him his change and receipt and saying Goodbye and make the gate go up.
She decided to try and discover things about him just by looking at whats inside his car.
She did think he was some kind of businessman because he wore a suit and had a good clean look.
A day later she looked at his hands to see if he had a wedding ring, he didn’t have one but it could still mean he had a girlfriend.

The next day she looked at the seat next to him to tell if someone ever sat there,
that only had his suitcase on it and no sign of life ever being there.
Than she looked at the backseat to see if he had kids but it was clean, empty and abandoned.
She thought about how to talk to him, she could say something other than “Good morning.”
but “I’m in love with you.” Would probably freak him out.
She could pass along a note with his change and receipt, but she figured small talk would be a better start.
That way they would get to know each other bit by bit, and she hoped he would see the same amazing thing as she did.
Each day he smiled back to her, she figured he was either being nice or felt something too.
He didn’t have to smile back like he did, most people didn’t but he did.
It was hard for her to ever believe he might, she was very plain and didn’t have much good looks.
She didn’t have a very flat belly, had small breasts and no ass in her pants.
Off course he couldn’t see that yet, but her face he could see which worried her just as much.
She never wore any make-up and she had boyish fashion and thick eyebrows.

For another week they exchange smiles and coins, she thinks about how to talk to him.
How the gate could get stuck so she would have some extra time with him.
But that might make him late for work and piss him off and he would think it was her fault.
What about disasters? She thought, he would pull up to her booth and a flood would rush over the freeway and would sweep away all the other booths and cars and leave them there all alone.
Or a plague of grass hoppers could eat everything in sight except them,
so he wouldn’t have to go to work anymore and they could talk forever.
“Anyone there?” the voice interrupts her daydreaming.
She quickly takes his money and by accident drops some on the floor of her booth.
She gives him back his change and opens and closes the gate twice.
He laughs and tells her to calm down and that he’s in no rush.
She can’t stop smiling and gives him his ticket and a note she folded which she wrote “I think I’m in love with you.” on.
She watches him drive away, he suddenly hits his breaks and sticks his head out of the side window.
He looks back at her and replies “I think I’m in love with you too.”
The next day due to global warming and climate changing it rained grasshoppers and a flood swept away all the booths and they shared the car for shelter and they talked forever.
