Sammy was sitting in a squatting position, and staring immensely into the depths of a green plastic bucket.
The toad inside had no clue what was going on and was wearing his poker-face and was staring back at the kid without moving any muscles he was positive he was going to win this staring contest, and he did when Sammy got called inside for dinner.
During dinner Sammy thought about how the frog was staring back at him, he looked sad to Sammy and he knew something had to be done.
The next morning Sammy was looking into the bucket again, studying the frog as it was hopping against the sides of the bucket.
Sammy knew the frog wanted out but the day before he saved it from being eaten by a cat, the outside world was far too dangerous for a little frog like him, so if he got out he might get eaten or run over by a car and die.
Sammy couldn’t stand the thought so he decided that if the frog was sad because it couldn’t go home then he would bring the frog’s home to the bucket.
He took a shovel and another bucket and made his way over to the pond close to where he found the cat fighting with the toad.
He shoveled some of the dirt near the edge of the pond and he pulled out a handful of reed.
The bottom of the bucket was filled with moist dirt and one quarter was filled with reed and he scooping in some more water in it for the frog to swim in.
He spotted a rock that was perfect for the frog to sit on and placed it inside the bucket.
Then he hauled the bucket back to his backyard and transported the frog into that bucket.
And to make sure he wouldn’t get out or suffocate he made a special lid using some left over rabbit fencing.
His mother called him for dinner just in time because he was starving, “mac and cheese!” Sammy cheered while running back inside leaving a trail of dirt behind him.
Sammy was sitting in a squatting position again, and hanging over the blue plastic bucket.
The toad inside had gotten used to his new bucket a bit and was sitting between the reeds looking up at the boy that brought his home to this strange hole.
To Sammy the toad looked lonely so he was going to try and find a girlfriend for him.
So again he want back to the pond but this time carrying a little net and the green bucket from before.
After spending hours near the pond he finally caught a frog but when he took a closer look at it, he wasn’t sure if it was a he or a she, he saw no rouge or lipstick but he figured the frog would either become the girlfriend or the brother of the other frog.
Right after he placed the new frog in the bucket with the other one, his mother called him inside for dinner.
During dinner she told him he wasn’t allowed to go near the pond anymore, considering the mess he made of himself and the house when he came back inside.
The next day Sammy was looking into the bucket again with the two frogs staring back at him.
He noticed they had everything they needed to live but not a croak or a ribbit left their chests.
Sammy got angry and kicked the bucket, the frogs were scared and hid themselves in the reeds again.
He went inside with tears on his cheeks and found his mother in the spare room behind a small desk with a sewing machine on it.
“What’s wrong dear?” she asked while opening her arms.
He sat down on her lap and hugged her and rested his head in her neck, “I rescued that frog and made it a nice home and found him a brother girlfriend and he still wont like me.”, He explained.
“You can’t play God, Sammy, God already does that.”, His mother said while trying to sooth him by rocking him from side to side.
She lifted him from her shoulders and made him stand up and told him, “They will be happy being in the pond again, and they will like you for setting them free for sure, how about we go together as soon as I finish fixing this dress?”
He smiled and dried his cheeks and nodded his head up and down.
His mother continued with her sowing and he watched her do so.
The dress was going through the machine and his eyes noticed a small silver thimble.
‘What if the world could fit inside a thimble, would someone be staring into it right now?’, he thought to himself.
