  • Heavy Hearts Sink Ships

    January 19, 2010 — With 463 words & Read — Labelled as: Story
There was a big splash and the bubbles he created passed by his ears, it was the last sound he heard, after that the only thing he could hear was his own heartbeat.
His heavy heart made him sink to the depths of the ocean, rays of the sunshine broke through the water’s surface and baked him in light as he slowly sank down to the bottom.
A school of sardines swim by him, their reflection was the last shimmer of light he saw as darkness started to surround him.
He looked over his shoulder and notice a strange glow at the bottom, sand rose up as he landed onto the ocean floor making it hard to look around until it settled again.
At the bottom he found all his old memories, each stored inside a jam jar, with anchors tied to them, they had a strange but soothing glow.
He felt relieved and released all the foul air out of his lungs, he remembered that he was on the bottom of the ocean and had trouble holding his last bits of breath.
The bubbles of air made their way back up to the surface and so did his legs, he knew the rest would followed so as fast as he could he grabbed onto as much jars as possible and untied the ropes around them, he released all the anchors he began going back up.
On his way up he started losing almost every memory filled jar, all but one.
He held onto the jar while treading water to keep himself from going under, then he popped the lid and looked inside the jar.
It wasn’t the memory he was hoping for, but it was still a good one.
He looked into the jar and the light covered his face and blinded his eyes.
The sound of children joyfully laughing entered his ears and the bright light began to fade.
The smell off sweets entered his nose, he opened his eyes again.
He sat down on a bench and figured out where he was, it was in the park near the home he grew up in.
He looked around and saw dogs chasing cats that were chasing mice that chased bugs.
Water started to rise below his shoes, he didn’t noticed it until his socks were soaking wet, he lifted his legs up and noticed a empty jar below the bench, bobbing up and down, asking to be picked up.
He picked it up and studied it, it looked just like the jars that were on the bottom of the sea, water continued to rise and waves came towards the park.
Standing on the bench wasn’t enough, and in a matter of minutes he was treading water again trying not to sink to the bottom.
He picked up the jar and opened the lid and looked inside.
