  • Good Morning Sleepyhead

    November 6, 2009 — With 1,056 words — Read — Share
She stretched her arms out way above her head.
Her mouth wide open while she woke up from her graceful sleep.
She moves her arms back down to her beautiful green eyes as she rubbed the crusties from her eyes.
And then she noticed something was different than usual.
She slowly lowered her hands back down to her sides which was followed by a chill than climbed up her spine.
A breeze picked up every strand of her red glowing hair.
She kicked her legs out of bed her eyes slowly adjusted to what was in front of her.
Her feet land in the ground below, little blades of grass pop up between her toes.

She saw a middle-aged man that dressed like a farmer standing in front of her, “Good morning sleepyhead!”
Still a bit dazed by her sleep she asked, “Is this a dream?”
“A dream, Lord no. I’m not this sweaty for no reason.”
He was right, his clothes had sweat stains all over them.
He cleared his forehead of some sweat with his handkerchief, “I hauled you all the way out here.”
She got up and asked, “Why? Where am I?”
She was surrounded by fields of tomatoes, strawberries and cherries, and her bed was next to a small house with big apple trees next to it.
“You are on my farm, and the why I will explain in a bit.”, He said while he stretched out his arms.
Birds were flying pass them, “I want to go home.”, She said.
He looked worried, “Oh don’t worry, I will get you home safe. I know it was rude to just kidnap you like this, but I really need your help.”
“Want to see the view first?”
, He asked with his eyebrows raised to their maximum height.
She felt confused by his question, all she saw around her were clouds, “View?”
He walked to the edge of the field and she followed him.
What she then saw was something she would never forget, she was floating high above the cities below.
They looked miniatures to her now, the farmer was leaning onto the picket fence that surrounded his farm, “My name is Ezekiel—no relation to the prophet.”
The wind moved through her hair, “This can’t be real?”
“Real? Whats that?”, He asked while he began to walk to one of the fields that he was growing crops on.
“Real is just a word for things that we know exist, and what makes you think none of this exists?”, He asked her.
She followed him to the field with strawberries.
“H.. How can we be flying like this.”, She asked.
“Simple, look up.”, He said as he picked a strawberry.
She looked up and saw a gigantic zeppelin that held onto the edges of the farm.
“This is insane.”, was all she could say.
    “Real insane.”, He said.
He presented her the strawberry which lacked the color red, she looked around and noticed it was the same for all his other fruit and vegetables.
“For some reason my crops are missing the color red. So I thought about what was missing, and I thought of Mother Earth.”, He said.
    “Mother Earth?” She asked.
“Yes, I took my farm up into the air and disconnected it from its mother. I guess they just miss some motherly love. And that’s why you’re here.”, He said.
She raised her voice and said, “But I don’t have any children!”
“No, but when I was searching for someone that could help me I saw the small balcony that is attached to your room, filled with flowers and plants that looked to be happy. I watched you for a while and saw you taking care of them with love, and you had such beautiful red hair that my plants might find extra special.”, He explained.
She wasn’t sure what to say so he continued, “So I could really use your help, maybe you could sing them a lullaby?”
“I only know the one my mother used to sing to me.”, She replied.
She began to sing the lullaby the best she could, the wind was rushing through her hair and it picked up her voice and began spreading it around the field.
And in a matter of minutes all the fruits and vegetables were turning the brightest red she had ever seen.
The plants and trees were dancing in the wind, they appeared to be an inch taller now.
“It worked. It worked!”, Ezekiel yelled while he jumped around his fields.
She was smiling and couldn’t help but laugh at him dancing around his crops.
“Thank you so much!”, He said as he took her hand and showed her how great his crops were doing.
They walked back to her bed, “You’re welcome.”, She said.
“Let’s get you back home.”, He said and began to tie ropes to her bed that were attached to some kind of trolley system.
He pulled a lever and her bed went up into the air, he began to measure the wind, and writing some calculations down.
“Don’t worry I tested this over a dozen times, just hold on tight.”, He said right when her bed was hovering next to the farm with only sky below it.
He pulled another lever and her bed began to fall down, he leaned over the picket fence and yelled, “Again, thanks for everything!”
She held onto the sides of her bed and watched the floating farm turn into a distant spot in the sky, the parachute released itself and she was gently plummeting down to Earth.
She felt sleepy again, and the feeling was stronger than her and she fell asleep.

“What on Earth are you doing in the backyard?!”
She opened her eyes again and saw her mother was standing at the end of her bed.
“And how did you get your bed all the way out here?” Her mother asked.
She got out of bed and looked up into the sky.
“I..”, Was all she could say.
A day had passed since her morning adventure and the doorbell rang.
She went to her small balcony holding a watering pot, ready to water her beloved plants she opened the sliding door.
Her eyes fell onto the basket placed on the door mat that said welcome.
She picked up the basket filled with fruits and vegetables, all red.
    The card said:
    ‘Theobroma, Food of the Gods.
    Thanks again! your friend,
    Ezekiel.’

She picked one of the strawberries from the basket and began to eat it.
Flavors began to swirl in her mouth and the taste was the best she had ever tasted.
She looked up into the sky, and waved at the small dot above.
