She pulls away the curtains and steps out of the dressing room “I feel bloated.”
Martha laughed “Those pants sure don’t help.” And she folded her legs and reclined in the plastic chair.
Abby looked at herself in the mirror to see if her pants fit right “I’m filled up to my neck with sadness. I can almost feel it gushing against the back of my tongue.“
The two of them have been friends all their life, and been through thick and thin as they would put it, but Martha would joke that also goes for the type of men they have been with.
But for the first time in their friendship Martha had no clue what to tell her best friend.
Abby unbuckles her pants and leans against the wall and lets herself slide down it “Like there’s no space for happiness anymore.“ She says while she rests her face in her hands, holding the palms of her hands like cups for her tears to fall in.
Martha starts to dig through her purse trying to find something “Abby Flo Tottie! Is a man keeping you down?” her hands return with two sweethearts, the heart shaped sugary treat has been their thing to nibble on when one of them got sad ever since they were teens.
It was tradition to read out what the writing on the candy said so Abby read hers first “Be Mine” she quickly put the candy in her mouth and watched Martha do hers.
“Mine says ‘Miss You’ Robert missing me? Surely he wont be bothered while he’s on top of a girl the same age as our daughter.”
Martha might have made that sound harsh and to personal to say in a clothing shop but her it’s not her comment but the way she used her voice that made it funny enough to be said.
Martha puts the candy in her mouth and they both begin to grind the hearts between their molars.
Unfortunately for Abby the heart shaped candy fought back and jumped into her throat and she began to choke to death.
She got up and started to panic making her pants fall down to her feet.
Her situation got even worse, she imagined herself being on the evening news.
Pant-less lady chokes on candy heart found dead on shop floor, but Martha was there to rescue her.
She turns her around and stood behind her and performed the Heimlich maneuver.
It took Martha a couple of tries to get it right and Abby made a grunting sound each time Martha tried to free the piece of candy from her throat.
The grunting got the attention of the shop clerk and she walked to the dressing rooms.
She witnessed the two ladies, one with her pants down, the other humping her.
Finally the maneuver worked and the bit of candy flew across the shop floor, in front of the clerk’s feet.
The young woman is staring at them and they start to laugh so hard the young woman covers her ears to protect her eardrums.
“Would you mind keeping it down.” And without waiting for a reply the young woman walks away.
Abby looks down to her feet “I have such a strange feeling.” She says as she pulls her pants back up.
“You just defied death!” Martha replies.
“No, it’s something else. Like I just lost a lot of weight.” Abby tells her.
Again using the mirror she checks how the pants look on her “It’s like just now that Heimlich maneuver released all my sadness along with that candy shaped heart.”
Martha is standing just outside of the dressing rooms and is resting herself on a clothing rack “Those pants seem to fit you better now.” and she laughs.
“Guess I’ll take it then.” Abby gets back into the dressing room and changes back into her dull pants and comes back out and they go to the register.
They come out of the shop laughing, “Let’s go man hunting tonight, you in your new sexy pants.” Martha says.
Abby takes a moment in which she wants to sink it all, but Martha drags her back to the surface.
“Life isn’t over yet Abby Flo Tollie. It has just begun.”
