Lenny withdrew all the money from his bank account, smashed his son’s piggy bank and took the money to the racetrack.
Placing all his money on Leaping Faith.
‘Like the song.’ Lenny thought before he placed the bet.
If his horse won he would win a ton of money and it would fix most of his debts.
It could mean the start of a new beginning, this would be his last bet.
But luck was not on Lenny’s side but on a elderly couple a couple of seats in front of him.
He lost all his money and had to go home and tell his wife.
Victor bought a lottery ticket for the 26.5 million euros lottery that will be draw tonight.
He goes to his local pub to watch the live on TV lottery draw, to see if he has won anything or not.
Lenny’s wife left him and took his son with her, and he realized he would be unable to pay his rent so would get kicked out of his house at the end of the month.
He was now alone in a cold and empty house, he decides that he will use his last spare change to get wasted in his local pub.
The two man are now seated next to each other both sitting on somewhat uncomfortable bar stools.
Victor’s eyes are glued to the TV set above the bar, “Hey, I’m Lenny. I lost everything I had today. Money, wife and kid, and soon my house.” Lenny tells the man seated next to him.
Victor is holding onto his ticket with his iron fist grip, “Victor’s the name, and I might win everything tonight, I’ll buy you a drink if I do.”
“Thanks.” Lenny looks to his left and sees a man sitting at a slot machine in the dark corner of the pub.
The blinking lights from the slot machine is the only thing that illuminates the mysterious looking man.
He is wearing thick glasses and is holding a cup of coffee, ‘Coffee, at night in a pub..’ Lenny thinks as he watches the man check inside his coffee cup, as if something could have fallen in or something.
Which he does before and after each sip.
After he is done drinking his coffee he checks the cup for the last time and puts it on top of the slot machine, and press the spin button.
He doesnt win anything and takes of his glasses and begins to clean them using the bottom part of his shirt.
After putting his glasses back on the man stares at the blinking lights, and looks like he is pondering if his next win is coming right after he presses the button.
The man keeps looking at his watch and presses the spin button again, “Lenny! Here it goes!” Victor says in all his excitement.
Lenny watches the TV and watches the balls floating in the machine which picks the balls one after another.
Victor is holding his ticket next to his view of the TV,
“12—23—40—47—53.”
The announcer repeats the numbers “12—23—40—47—53.”
Lenny looks to his right and sees Victor frozen in time, holding the ticket in front of his face.
He hears a loud noise coming from his left, the man behind the slot machine just won the jackpot.
But he shows no sign of joy just like Victor.
“Poor a drink for Lenny will ya.” Victor tells the barkeeper.
Lenny accepts the beer and toasts against the glass next to Victor, “So you won?” he asks.
The barkeeper went to the slot machine guy and gave him his winnings, about €500,- Lenny thinks.
“Yeah, can you believe it?” Victor replies as he picks up his coat and begins to walk out of the pub.
The slot machine man also starts leaves and Lenny lets him exit first.
“Be right back!” Lenny says tot the barkeeper and he makes his way outside leaving his coat behind.
He almost runs out of the pub and is in the middle of the street looking around to see where the two have gone.
“You should put on a coat, it’s freezing.” He turns around and sees Victor the newborn millionaire leaning against the wall with the slot machine guy standing next to him smoking a cigarette, “So Victor here tells me you lost everything?”
Lenny confesses, “All my savings, my wife and son left me and I’ll lose my house too.”
The slot machine guy makes smoke rings in the air, “The loser amongst winners then.”
Victor steps through them, “Just hypothetically speaking, let’s say that there was a universal balance of winning and losing that has to be kept in order to keep it together. And let’s say for each two winner there has to be a loser, and you would be allowed to for once change who the loser was, who would you choose?”
Lenny stood there thinking about it his whole body shivering in the freezing cold night, “You two won fair and square, I’m addicted to gambling and lost everything because of it. I don’t wish that upon anyone, just so I can get a second chance I might not deserve.”
“That’s nobel.” The slot machine man says as he throws his cigarette in the gutter.
“So how much did you lose today?” Victor asks.
“Today, about 5000 euros which has left me in debt with the wrong kind of people.”
Victor gets a smile on his face, “How about I give you that 5000, and you repay me some day?”
“I couldn’t accept that, why would you help a guy like me?”
“Well, I don’t have it on me, but how about we meet here tomorrow and you can give me a good reason then.”
Victor and the slow machine guy begin to cross the street, “I’m giving this guy a ride home, see you tomorrow Lenny.”
Lenny is standing between two parked cars and see them walking to the parked car.
They are half way on the street and Lenny hears a strange sound above him, he looks up and sees a strange light coming down and creating a high pitch only he seems to be hearing, “WATCH OUT!” he yells at the two winners.
He runs to them and pushes them to the side of the road, which leaves him in the middle of the street.
The light crashes down on top of Lenny.
The two winner get up from between some parked cars and see a car resting on Lenny, who appears to be fine.
They run up to him, and the slot machine guy is walking around it, inspecting it.
Victor kneels next to Lenny’s head, “Are you alright Lenny?”
Lenny seems to be a bit dazed, “Yeah, I think so.”
“Car-nage” The slot machine guy shouts.
“Yes, we can see that by all the scrap metal in the street.” Victor says.
“No, this car is from that show not far from here, where they destroy old cars.”
“So how did this one get all the way out here?”
The slot machine guy walks up to the other side of Lenny and explains, “I heard they had this new part of the show where the catapult a old car across the arena. Guess they miscalculated a bit.”
“I will call an ambulance.” Victor says, and he picks his mobile phone from his coat and begins to call.
Lenny who is still underneath the car turns his head to the slot machine guy, “Can I ask you something?”
“You can try.” He replies.
“Why did you keep checking your coffee cup?”
“Fortunetelling. See when I could win or not.” The slot machine guy explains.
Lenny tries to get up but is stuck on something, “But that’s with tea leaves.”
“Really?”
“Yep.” Victor adds.
“Ok, their on their way.”
The slot machine guy lights up another cigarette “Wow, then I guess I just got lucky.”
“Seems you did get lucky too Lenny.” Victor says.
The ambulance and fire department arrive, and with an easy and quick lift of the wrecked car Lenny was freed.
“Concider yourself lucky.” The fire chief told Lenny.
Lenny didnt feel all that lucky, “If the universe believes in you then so do I.”
“The universe?” Lenny asks.
“Yep.” Victor replies as he picks the ticket from his pocket.
“See my ticket didn’t win the grand prize, it won 5000 euros. And I give them to you.”
He hands Lenny the ticket, “For saving our lives.”
“I don’t know what to say.”
“How about you won’t gamble with anything ever again.”
Victor laughs and walks back to his car, gets in and starts his engine.
He rolls his window down “See you around Lenny-boy.”
Victor drives off into the distance, and the first thing Lenny did was call his wife to tell her all about his lucky night.
Later that month the organization behind ‘Car-nage’ gave Lenny and his family free tickets for life.
Lenny invited Victor to join him and his wife and kid.
They watched monster trucks crushing cars like soda cans together.
Victor takes a sip of his slushie, “Hope they get the catapult thing right this time.”
Placing all his money on Leaping Faith.
