The pigeon always knew it was born in the wrong body.
When it was just a baby pigeon it told his mother he wanted to be a Robin.
At first she thought he was joking but as he grew older she learned that he was being serious.
He had always felt more like a Robin than a pigeon, and he tried his best to look more like one.
When he was old enough to fly he sneaked out of the nest to find places he could change his appearance, he rolled around in dirt on a construction site until he looked brown instead of grey.
In a nearby park he saw the benches had just been painted a bright red color, so he brushed his chest against it until it was just as red.
He didn’t walk the same as the other pigeons did, he skipped around instead and he did not bob his head back and forth.
And while everyone was cooing he tried to chirp which sounded more like he was being strangled.
When he entered puberty his parents got run over by a truck and he was left all alone, and he found out that they were protecting him from all the other pigeons his whole life and he was now left to defend himself.
The other pigeons thought he was a freak of nature and they casted him from the roof.
He had to find shelter in one of the backyards below, to him the hole in the birdhouse looked big enough but he only got his head inside until he got stuck and couldn’t get it out.
His feet were scratching against the wood, and he was trying his best to push himself out.
He held in his breath and finally got out and fell on the ground and was a bit dazed by the landing.
The pigeon was getting back on his feet when he heard a strange sound behind him.
He slowly turned around and looked straight into the mouth of a cat.
It’s big pointy teeth, saliva dripping from his fangs, corners of his mouth raised, ready to swallow him whole.
The cat’s tongue rolled out of it’s mouth and the pigeon closed his eyes and awaited death.
There was a moment of complete silence and all the pigeon could hear was his own heart beating, did the cat leave?
Suddenly he felt his face getting wet, he opened his eyes and the cat kept licking his face while it made a weird almost barking sound.
‘Hey! Watch the paint.’, The pigeon yelled.
‘Sorry kind pigeon.’, The cat said.
‘I’m a Robin.’, The pigeon said.
‘Sorry again kind Robin.’, The cat said.
The cat wagged his tail like a dog, the pigeon saw his tail was very short and looked as if it got cut off.
‘Mind if I ask you why you did not eat me?’ The pigeon asked.
‘Eat you? Never! I just want to be friends. But you do taste funny for a Robin.’, The cat said and licked the pigeons face one last time.
‘That’s because of the paint and dirt.’, The pigeon said and saying that made him feel sad.
‘So you are like me? Wanting to be something you’re not.’, The cat said while he was chasing his tail.
‘Yes I am a Robin trapped inside a pigeon’s body.’, The pigeon explained.
The cat stopped chasing his tail, ‘Wow, and I am a dog trapped inside a cat.’
The pigeon couldn’t believe his ears.
‘You know there are more like us, transspecies we meet every night at the alley behind a nightclub named The Drag’, The cat explained.
‘More like us?’ The pigeon asked.
‘You will see tonight, I’ll come pick you up.’, The cat said right before it left through a loose board in the fencing.
That night the pigeon made his way to the nightclub and the cat was there already waiting for him.
‘Good evening, follow me.’, The cat said and walked towards a group of animals that formed a circle.
‘Hey guys I brought a new friend tonight.’, The cat said as he took his place in the circle.
‘Make some new for our new friend the Robin.’, The cat said, and the pigeon took his place in the circle.
‘A Robin how beautiful you look.’, The mouse said.
The mouse looked different then a usual mouse, the pigeon inspected her and she looked more like a small rabbit, two pieces of feta cheese as buck teeth, paper pointy ears and a cotton ball stuck to her back.
‘Let’s begin our meeting, Ringo why don’t you go first.’, The cat said as he chewed on a bone.
Ringo was a overweight dog, who like all the other animals wanted to be someone else, he wanted to be a elephant, his weight and the piece of vacuum hose between his yaws explained that.
‘My owner wanted me to catch a ball, have you ever seen a elephant catch a ball?’, Ringo said.
All the other transspecies in the circle were outraged, ‘Owners have no idea how we feel.’, The cat said.
The turtle took his turn, ‘My owner keeps putting me back in my terrarium, but I hate water, I want to be up in the sky, flying like a bird.’, The turtle said.
‘I found a plastic surgeon online with a practice Mexico where they can perform the surgery to give me wings.’, The turtle explained.
Their meeting gets interrupted by the backdoor of the club slamming against the brick wall as it got kicked open.
A hairy man wearing a dress, a blond wig and with heavy make up on his face steps outside right in the middle of lighting his cigarette, “Can’t believe this shitty place, booing me off stage like that, they wouldn’t be able to tell if it was a real woman if they saw one.”
The drag queen fixes his bra and his phone rings and he opens his small purse and picks it out with his fingers that have long red fake fingernails on them.
“Gerald. Oh hey honey, yeah I’m running late at the office. It’s a madhouse here, you know how it goes. Okay, don’t wait up for me love.”, He said to his wife on the other end.
He continues to smoke his cigarette and looks up at each puff of smoke he exhales that mingles with the moon and stars.
‘I’m a cat, I don’t chase mice. You’re a mouse but don’t eat cheese. You’re a dog but you don’t steal a string of sausages from the butcher each morning. You’re a turtle that wants to be up in the air. You’re a pigeon that wants to be a Robin.’, The cat said right before the drag queen scared the transspecies anonymous group away.
“Filthy animals.”, He yelled while he chased them out of the alley which led to him breaking the heel of his right high heel shoe.
